Doctor of Philosophy

General Objective

The primary objective of the PhD study program is to contribute to the nation in reducing the shortage of trained human power in the field of civil engineering and enrich the newly opened universities with high caliber professionals capable of solving practical engineering problems in the field of civil engineering.

Program Structure

This program will be coordinated by the respective Chair of each field of specialization, under the umbrella of home grown postgraduate program coordinator’s office at Jimma Institute of Technology of Jimma University. The PhD program will be governed according to regulations and guidelines of Jimma University. Texas Tech University of the United States of America is under contract with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MoE) until November 2017 to work in partnership with Jimma University to develop and launch the new PhD program until the program has reached an acceptable maturity, it will seek, as needed, the support and collaborations from other schools, institutes and colleges in the course delivery and advising PhD students.

Graduate Profile

Upon completion of the PhD in Civil Engineering, the students will attain six learning outcomes within each specialization, namely, transportation engineering, construction engineering, structural engineering, and sustainable water resource engineering.

  • Core Knowledge: Students will demonstrate advanced knowledge in a core area consistent with the focus of their specialization in the programme

  • Research Methods and Analysis: Students will demonstrate quantitative and qualitative skills in the design, analysis, and presentation of research projects that is consistent with the focus of their specialization in the programme

  • Scholarly Communication: Students will become better written and oral communicators as consistent with the focus of their specialization in the programme

  • Independent Research: Students will be able to conduct independent research resulting in an original contribution to knowledge in the focused areas of their specialization in the programme

  • Pedagogy: Students will be able to effectively teach using classroom pedagogy consistent with undergraduate and postgraduate education in the focused areas of their specialization in the programme

  • Professionalism: Students will be able to contribute to the intellectual and organizational aspects of the profession as applicable to areas of their specialization

The above six student learning outcomes will constitute the graduate profile of the students upon graduation. These outcomes are done by the students, and are observable and measurable. These three characteristics allow assessment methods and benchmarks to be constructed to collect and analyze assessment data in order to improve the programme.

Duration of the program

The program is a 3 year (6 equal semesters) program of which a minimum of four semesters will be dedicated to research activity. If the candidate is unable to finish his/her study within the stipulated time-frame for acceptable reasons, the doctoral council may grant the candidate an extension of up to 2 years.

Graduate Requirement

In addition to the successful completion of the stipulated coursework schedule (with a minimum grade of “B” in each course), the following milestones must be accomplished:

Seminars and Progress Report - The candidate is expected to provide satisfactory progress reports to the advisor and advisory committee. The students are also expected to make seminar presentations every year for the first three years.

Publication - A PhD candidate should publish at least one (1) article and submit two (2) others in reputable peer reviewed journals.

Doctoral Dissertation

  • The doctoral dissertation shall constitute individual effort in academic pursuits to identify and analyze problems using sound methodology;

  • The PhD dissertation committee as stated in the Jimma University Regulations and Guidelines document should approve the doctoral dissertation. Members of this committee will be those who have PhD degree and working in Higher Education Institutions or private sectors. This committee will have Chairperson and Secretary. After reading, the committee will decide to either postponed the date of defense in case of major comments or approve the defense for the predetermined program.

  • A doctoral dissertation shall constitute the fulfillment of the requirement to the PhD Degree Program.

Dissertation Defense

The candidate should successfully defend his/her PhD thesis in public in the presence of the Examination Committee as stipulated in the Jimma University Regulations and Guidelines document.

Specializations

The doctoral program is offered in four specializations namely Transportation Engineering (which has two tracks Traffic and Geomatics track and Pavements track), Sustainable Water Resources Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Structural Engineering.
